Tech Disrupts Education & Uncovering the Digital Divide
September 30, 2020
Plus Pods, Tools & Tips!
Educators have long known about inequalities in internet and technology among students, disproportionately impacting Black, Hispanic, Native American, and low-income families. But now, as many school districts begin the year with at least some online learning, the students without these resources are at risk of falling farther behind.
These back-to-school tech tips only scratch the surface of the support needed as millions of North American adults and kids juggle remote work, online learning, and hybrid schedules that mix in-person interaction with virtual instruction.
Discussion ideas include If the government made Wi-Fi free for everyone, how that would impact students? Broadband could replace their cell service, thus leveling access.

Disruptive Techies Webinar: Tech Disrupts Goal Setting - POSSIBLE?
Date: Wednesday, June 24th, 2020
Watch and listen as panelists discuss the practicality of setting up life-changing goals in these challenging times, where the future seems unknown. They offer positive and pragmatic solutions: How specific new technology products can simplify things, can give us the opportunity to address systemic racism, and can overcome challenges in order to differentiate between the individual and the small group thinking. "If people can pursue their purpose in life, the world will become a better place for everyone," said WeUp’s Ramona Wright.
IBM’s Roger Osorio explained that "People can use the technology available and re-focus it on issues that are both urgent and important in the long-term. It’s important to make sure when we are goalsetting and future planning to be aware of the possibility that another Pandemic can occur so that we can be better prepared. In these challenging times, we have the unique opportunity to reach out to people that we never thought possible.”

Disruptive Technologists Fireside Chat: Disruptive Diversity/Education Change the World!
Disruptive Technologists Webinar: Disruptive Diversity/Education Change the World!
Date: Wednesday, May 13th, 2020
Fireside Chat Panelists hold a discussion on the challenges and opportunities that emerging tech has for age, race, gender, income, and its ability to further education and inclusion.
Fireside Chat Panelists:
1. Joanna Gilberti, Archemy (AI)
2. Julian Newman, Culture Creative
3. Voltaire Exodus, Founder, WeUp
4. Esther Dyson, Executive Founder, Wellville & Investor Extraordinaire incl. Square
Among the topics discussed:
(1) how cultural diversity spans far wider than ethnicity where technology is concerned
(2) how the generational culture has a definite impact on the use of technology in the workplace, and to some extent, racial and socioeconomic differences
(3) the primary reason racial differences are a factor where technology in the workplace is concerned due to what is called the "digital divide"
Esther Dyson said, “AI has exposed our biases which has made us reflect a lot about inclusion and diversity. However, in tech companies, there are other non-tech jobs needed. Also, there is the misconception that minorities come to AI events when the topic discussed is related to Diversity or Inclusion in AI, and not to other topics like funding AI. So we need to improve the communication.” Julian Newman replied, “If I do not see myself as being a part of the industry, it does not matter to me the invitation or the number of events, I need to see myself -- and minorities need to see themselves --as part of the industry. That is where the connection and the long term approach needs to happen.”
